When you want to connect your Outlook or Microsoft 365 mailbox to Starhunter, Microsoft may display a message during sign-in stating that administrator consent is required. This article explains what the message means and how you can set up the connection afterwards.
What does the message mean?
The message comes directly from Microsoft. It means that your organization has restricted consent for third-party apps. In this case, a user cannot fully approve the connection themselves. A Microsoft administrator in your organization must review and approve the requested permissions once.
This is a Microsoft security feature and not a Starhunter administrator setting. A Starhunter administrator manages permissions within Starhunter. A Microsoft administrator manages your company's Microsoft 365 accounts, security policies, and app approvals.
Who is affected?
Not every organization requires this additional approval. Many users can connect Microsoft 365 directly to Starhunter. Whether administrator consent is required depends on your organization's Microsoft security policies.
The message typically appears during an initial connection or when reconnecting, for example after a disconnected connection, a password change, or a change to Microsoft security policies. Existing connections that are already working are normally not affected.
What do users need to do?
- Open your personal profile in Starhunter.
- Go to the Email section.
- Click Connect email next to the Microsoft icon.
- In the Microsoft window, sign in with the mailbox you want to connect to Starhunter.
- If Microsoft asks for administrator consent, contact your internal IT team or Microsoft 365 administrator.
After the Microsoft administrator has granted approval, start the connection in Starhunter again. You should then be able to connect using your own Microsoft 365 account.
What does IT or the Microsoft administrator need to do?
The Microsoft administrator needs to review the Starhunter connection in Microsoft and grant the requested consent if the connection should be allowed in your organization. The approval is granted in the customer's Microsoft environment. Starhunter Support cannot configure these Microsoft-side permissions on behalf of the customer.
You can forward the following Starhunter-specific details to your IT team for review:
- App registration ID: 68a3a7e8-db53-418f-9c49-fa0518677024
- elunic tenant ID: 568d42aa-e517-489a-b9f5-6db09151bc86
- Note: The Outlook / Microsoft 365 connection uses an app registration that is verified via elunic.com. This app registration controls the access permissions that Starhunter may use in Outlook or Microsoft 365.
After administrator consent has been granted
After consent has been granted, start the mailbox connection in Starhunter again and sign in with the actual mailbox that should be connected.
If the administrator's account was used first during the administrator approval process, the connection process must then be repeated with the user account whose mailbox should be connected to Starhunter.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Microsoft administrator the same as the Starhunter administrator?
No. The Microsoft administrator manages Microsoft 365, mailboxes, security policies, and app consent. The Starhunter administrator manages settings and user permissions within Starhunter.
Does consent need to be granted separately for each user?
This depends on your organization's Microsoft settings. In many cases, a Microsoft administrator can grant consent for the organization. Whether this is possible, and to what extent, depends on the customer's Microsoft configuration.
Can Starhunter Support grant consent for us?
No. The consent concerns the customer's Microsoft environment and security policies. It must be granted by the customer's internal IT team, Microsoft administrator, or responsible Microsoft service provider.
My existing connection is working. Do I need to do anything?
If your Microsoft 365 connection in Starhunter is currently working, no action is normally required. Administrator consent is mainly relevant when a mailbox is connected for the first time or reconnected.
Where can I find the general mailbox setup guide?
You can find the general guide in the article Setup of the Email Mailbox & Email Synchronization.
Summary
The administrator consent message is a Microsoft security check. If your organization requires this consent, your IT team or Microsoft administrator must approve the Starhunter app registration. Afterwards, the connection can be started again in Starhunter and completed with the desired Microsoft 365 mailbox.
